So this article sounds very intriguing and interesting...but I just don't quite understand it. How about you? Care to explain this to me? Thoughts about its feasibility? Pros? Cons?

It's simple. I have realized that I'm not living as well as I could be. I'm not telling anybody else what they should do, but keeping a journal for myself of the changes I make to my life in an attempt to live up to my standards of what a good global citizen is. I think the more input, support, and insight I get, the more successful I will be. What I have realized is that, for me, living better means living a greener, simpler, more frugal life - they all go hand in hand.

interesting / useful websites
my rules for me
These are the new rules for my life. I make them up and I have to follow them. That's it. If, however, you'd like to join me and try some of them out, I would be super excited. I'd also love to hear suggestions and/or your rules for your life.
1. I will only buy non-grocery items if they have been on a written list for a minimum of two weeks.
2. I will not purchase new items if I can get the same item used and still meet my needs.
3. I will think more consciously before consuming resources. I will try to find simple ways to use less.
4. I will remember that one of the simplest ways to use less is to buy less.
5. When possible, I will buy less by not buying things that are pre-packaged and will instead buy bulk.
6. When possible and practical, I will not purchase a food item that I can make just as well at home, especially if it cuts down on packaging and is less expensive to do so.
7. Before I throw an item away, I will consider whether somebody might have a good use for my trash.
8. Before I purchase a new item, I will consider whether I could borrow the item rather than buying my own.
9. I will share my things with members of my community, especially those things I use infrequently.
10. No plastic water bottles.
11. I will maintain my appliances so that they use as little energy as possible.
12. I will actively work to keep clutter to a minimum in an effort to avoid unneccessary purchases.
13. I will maintain a critical attitude towards media and advertising.
14. I will buy locally produced food as often as possible.
15. I will at least consider public transportation as an alternative to driving each time I make a trip.
16. I will continue to educate myself.
17. I will eat less meat.
18. I will be more mindful of how much total food I eat.
19. I will demand accountability from companies I do business with.
21. I will become more involved in shaping my future by participating more actively in the political process.

About Me
positive things I already do / changes I've implemented
- buy in bulk whenever possible
- carry a plastic fork in my purse in case I stop at a restaurant that uses disposables - then bring it home, wash, and reuse
- use salvaged materials for packaging items to be mailed
- use cloth napkins
- Use organic cotton produce bags for store bought produce and bulk items
- belong to a CSA as my main source of produce
- use a sigg rather than buying bottled water
- keep worms in the garage for food scraps
- bike when it's practical
- walk when it's practical (not often!)
- drink tap water, not bottled
- turn off water while soaping up in shower
- don't wash hair every day
- collect extra shower water for plants
- air dry laundry
- wash clothes in cold water
- junk mail opt out
- sharing used books rather than buying new
- bring my own mug when I know I'm going for coffee
- reuse yogurt, sour cream, etc. containers for storage
- use smallest pot / pan possible when cooking
- only run dishwasher / washing machine when full
- turned down temperature on water heater
- use compact fluorescent bulbs
- reuse towels multiple times
- bring my own shopping bags and reused produce bags to the grocery store
- recycle paper, plastic, aluminum, tin, styrofoam
changes I'm working on implementing now
- eating more organic / free range / raw / healthy foods
- buy less stuff
- buying things with little or no packaging
- balcony veggie plants (try not to kill this time)
- read more
- eliminating household use of paper towels, paper napkins, saran wrap, aluminum foil, and ziploc bags
- phasing out cleaning products and using only baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, etc around the house
longer term goals
- get a solar oven
- open a green business
- when upgrading stuff in home, be conscious of impact of materials used
- install solar if HOA allows
- get rid of our 2nd car
- make all my own gifts (birthday, christmas, other)
- learn canning / preserving / pickling
- learn to sew
